MEASURING GUIDE

Measure with confidence.
Order the right size.

This guide explains how to measure a window or door opening before ordering a supply-only, made-to-measure product.

ImportantYou are responsible for the measurements submitted with your order. If you are unsure, ask a qualified surveyor or installer to measure before ordering.
Before you begin
① A reliable tape measure② Paper or phone for notes③ Measure in millimetres④ Measure from brickwork/opening
← WIDTH →
STEP 01

Measure the width

Measure the opening horizontally in three places:

  1. Across the top
  2. Across the middle
  3. Across the bottom

Write down all three measurements and use the smallest width.

HEIGHT
STEP 02

Measure the height

Measure the opening vertically in three places:

  1. Down the left side
  2. Down the centre
  3. Down the right side

Write down all three measurements and use the smallest height.

DEPTH
STEP 03

Check depth and surroundings

Confirm there is enough depth for the selected frame. Check for anything that could affect fitting or opening:

  • Internal plaster and external render
  • Window boards, tiles and trims
  • Lintels, sills, pipes and cables
  • Handles, walls and nearby furniture
ALLOWANCE & DEDUCTIONS

Do not order the exact opening size.

A fitting allowance is normally deducted from both the smallest width and the smallest height so the frame can be positioned, levelled and sealed. The allowance for the width and height must each be confirmed for the particular opening and installation method.

The 10 mm shown is an example—not an automatic deduction. Windows Outlet does not alter the measurements entered with an order. Enter the finished manufacturing width and height you require. If you only have structural opening measurements, confirm both allowances with your installer before ordering.

WIDTH EXAMPLE ONLY — NOT A FIXED RULE
Smallest opening width1,205 mm
Installer-approved deduction− 10 mm
Finished order width1,195 mm
Repeat the process separately for the smallest height, using the allowance approved for that installation. Do not assume the width and height deductions are the same.
FRAME DEPTH & WINDOW CILLS

Confirm the complete specification.

Check the frame and cill details as well as the opening measurements before placing a made-to-measure order.

70 mm frame depthAll our window and door frames, including sliding patio doors, have a front-to-back depth of 70 mm.
How the cill fitsThe whole frame sits on top of the cill. The cill forms part of the base detail beneath the frame; it does not butt against the front of it.
Overall cill sizesCills are available in overall depths of 85, 150, 180 and 225 mm. These sizes include the 70 mm occupied by the frame, leaving approximately 15, 80, 110 or 155 mm respectively extending beyond the frame.
Frame and cill measurements

These pictures show the 70 mm frame depth and how the frame sits on a 150 mm overall cill.
